South City Child Killed In Fatal Hit-And-Run

South City Child Killed In Fatal Hit-And-Run

A South St. Louis boy was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident Tuesday night. According to St. Louis Police, a 12-year-old boy was struck near Delor Street and Gravois Avenue at approximately 10:40 p.m. Police say a northbound red 4-door Audi was traveling at a high rate of speed on Gravois when it struck the boy. The driver did not stop but fled the scene of the crash. Authorities say the boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. The vehicle struck the boy when he was crossing the road against the stop light, according to police. Many residents say the intersection is notorious for speeding motorists. Loved ones of the victim say the boy would have been a 7th grader at Long Middle School. The St. Louis Public Schools Deputy Superintendent says they are helping students and staff members with the grieving process. Police are investigating the fatal pedestrian accident and looking for a suspect.

A pedestrian death occurs every two hours in the U.S., according to the data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also reports more than 150,000 people receive medical treatment for pedestrians accidents each year in the U.S. That is a staggering number of people injured every year.
