Dangerous Chemical Spill In Kansas Leaves Several People Sick

chemical spill at a distilling plant in Kansas caused the injury and illness of at least
85 people. According to authorities, almost a hundred people were medically
treated after a chemical spill at an Atchison distilling plant caused
a noxious cloud. According to the Kansas Department of Emergency Management,
a cloud formed Friday morning after two chemicals were accidently combined
at the MGP Ingredients plant in Atchison. The spill occurred just after
8 a.m. during a routine delivery at MGP Ingredients located at 100 Commercial
Street. Government officials say a chemical was mistakenly put into the
wrong tank at the sewage plant area of the facility. This caused a dangerous
reaction. Hazmat crews were called to the facility and used a foam substance
to treat the spill. An evacuation order was issued for the plant as well
as local businesses, schools, and daycares in the Atchison area.
An Atchison Hospital spokeswoman said the majority of people sought emergency
care for upper respiratory discomfort. One person is reported to be in
serious condition in the ICU. Several people are being held for observation.
Witness say they could see a huge cloud of what looked like fog. Reports
of a bleach smell were reported miles away in other towns.
MGP Ingredients plant manufactures premium distilled spirits, starches
and wheat proteins. According to the company's website, the plant
employs 300 people. Local officials say this is not the first accident
that has happened at the facility. Two explosions have happened at the
company within the last 15 years. The Kansas Department of Emergency Management
says the evacuation order was lifted and people were allowed back into
their homes when the cloud dissipated a few hours later.
