A Newport News, Virginia police officer was
bitten by a pit bull/ German sheppard mix while responding to a domestic incident.
The officer reported that when they arrived to the scene a dog ran out
in an aggressive manner and was showing its teeth. The dog then bit the
officer on his hand and went to bite again. However, the officer fired
at the dog, grazed it and ran in the other direction. The dog was recovered
and taken to a veterinarian clinic where it was treated. Police are still
investigating this incident.
It is estimated that there are over 78 million dogs in the United States
and approximately 4.5 million dog bites each year. Dog bites not only
happen from dogs unknown to the victim but can happen to owners as well.
It is always important to talk to your loved ones regarding animal safety
and what to do if they are approached by an agitated dog. Dog bites can
range from small flesh wounds to severe injuries that require immediate
medical attention. Sadly, many dog bites not only cause the victim pain
