A young Pevely woman was killed in a fatal
pedestrian accident in Jefferson County yesterday. According to the Missouri State Highway
Patrol, the 31-year-old woman was fatally struck by a tractor- trailer
truck while walking in the right lane of northbound Interstate 55. The
accident occurred near mile marker 183.4, just north of Pevely at approximately
11:30 p.m. Officials of Rock Township EMS declared her dead at the scene
just 15 minutes after the accident. Police are uncertain why the woman
was walking on the highway. The 61-year old truck driver of the 2009 Freightliner
was unharmed. Police say he has not been cited for the accident. The interstate
was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the accident
and cleared the scene.
