Xarelto Lawsuits Increase in Multidistrict Litigation

Xarelto Lawsuits Increase in Multidistrict Litigation

As November draws to a close, there have been approximately 2,266 lawsuits filed and consolidated in multidistrict litigation against the manufacturers of the blood thinner, Xarelto. Plaintiffs are claiming that the manufacturers, Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, failed to warn users of the risks associated with using Xarelto, especially the lack of an antidote. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Xarelto in 2011 to prevent strokes in those who suffer from atrial fibrillation and to treat deep vein thrombosis.

Bayer and Johnson & Johnson have highly promoted their drug for being the convenient choice for an anticoagulant. Coumadin, generically referred to as Warfarin, is one of the most known anticoagulants because it has been on the market for much longer than newer drugs, such as Xarelto. Coumadin requires users to undergo regular monitoring and a restricted diet, and Xarelto does not require any lifestyle changes. However, the effects of Coumadin can be reversed by using Vitamin K as an antidote. Xarelto does not offer any antidote resulting in serious injuries and death.

One of the thousands of plaintiffs to have filed a Xarelto claim is Ashlie Fluitt who alleges that her grandmother died due to the lack of an antidote. After two months of being prescribed Xarelto, Hattie Deville-Goodwin suffered an intracranial bleed that led to her death because there was no antidote to stop the effects of Xarelto and control the bleeding. Fluitt believes Bayer and Johnson & Johnson are to blame for not warning patients about the risks of their drug.
