Huge Verdicts Raise Concern Over Baby Powder Safety

Huge Verdicts Raise Concern Over Baby Powder Safety

Baby powder manufacturer Johnson & Johnson was recently ordered to pay more than $127 million to end two St. Louis lawsuits alleging that their talcum powders caused ovarian cancer. The company is facing at least 1,200 other lawsuits making similar accusations, and claiming that the company knew about the risk and failed to take action to warn consumers. With so much pending litigation, many consumers are concerned that the products they have used for years are unsafe.

Studies have shown that talc-containing products cause inflammation when applied to the genital region. Particles can also migrate into the body, where they can embed in the tissues of the ovaries and lead to the formation of potentially cancerous tumors.

According to a federal health survey, more than half of American women have used baby powder in their genital area at one time or another. Because this is thought to be a more popular practice among Hispanic and African American women, the company is further accused of taking advantage of this knowledge and marketing its products accordingly.

Does Baby Powder Cause Ovarian Cancer?

Some studies that have relied on women’s memories to track talcum powder usage have shown a link to an increased risk of cancer, while others following women’s health habits over time have proven inconclusive. The American Cancer Society is conducting ongoing research on talcum powder and ovarian cancer but currently classifies talc as a “possible carcinogen.” With cornstarch powders and other safe alternatives on the market, women are advised to discontinue use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene until further research is conducted.

Johnson & Johnson denies any dangers associated with their products and plans to appeal both verdicts. However, with their sizable losses, the company may move toward settling future cases.
