Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation
Yesterday automaker, General Motors, recalled an additional 8.2 million vehicles due to defective ignition switches. This latest addition to General Motors' safety crisis brings the total number of vehicles recalled by the automaker to 28 million in this year alone. The recall, which involves predominately older midsize cars, comes after General Motors learned of 3 deaths, 8 injuries and 7 crashes allegedly linked to the defect. However, the company stated that it has no conclusive evidence that faulty switched caused these crashes. With this latest development, the Detroit-based company says it expects to spend $2.5 billion in recall related expenses. Seven vehicles are included in this latest recall, including the Chevrolet Malibu, model years 1997 through 2005 and the Pontiac Grand Prix, model years 2004 through 2008. The Cadillac CTS, model years 2003 through 2014 are also included in the recall, which was reportedly initiated due to "unintended ignition key rotation." The company implied that this recall and any future recalls should substantiate the company's safety initiatives. General Motors has advised consumers who may be in possession of these recalled vehicles to remove everything from their key rings until the recalled vehicles can be repaired. In addition to this larger recall, the company also announced four separate recalls, encompassing more than 200,000 additional vehicles.
