$11.2 Million Awarded in Tainted Peanut Butter Lawsuit

The largest fine ever handed out in a U.S. food safety case was given to
ConAgra after entering a plea deal after shipping adulterated food. Hundreds
of Americans became sick a decade ago, after eating
Peter Pan peanut butter that was contaminated with salmonella. A District Court judge approved
an $8 million fine and $3.2 million in cash forfeitures. This case has
been ongoing for a decade after 625 people were sickened in 47 different
states after consuming Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter.
The company issued a recall in 2007. However, the recall included peanut
butter sold since 2004 and most had already been consumed. A plant in
