On December 16, 2016, John Steward, of counsel with Meyerkord, Meyerkord & Kurth along with his co-counsel Daniel T. Ryan and Cyrus Dashtaki, obtained a $2.5 million jury verdict against the Board of Police Commissioners in the City of St. Louis.
This case stemmed from an incident that occurred on September 25, 2011. On this date, the client, who was an innocent bystander, suffered the loss of her leg as the result of a high-speed police pursuit by a St. Louis city police officer.
According to research, this is one of the first cases of its kind to reach a jury verdict as many of these cases have been dismissed before ever making it to trial due to difficulties in establishing proximate cause.
However, Attorney Steward, Attorney Ryan, and Attorney Dashtaki were able to successfully argue that her case was proper for a trial by jury. Together, they conducted multiple depositions of the police and other individuals to obtain the facts necessary to go to trial.
This team’s victory signifies the innovative legal strategies and hard work used to develop the case and to recover such a large verdict.
