St. Louis is home to several sawmills where dangerous machinery is operated on a daily basis. The machinery used at a sawmill, and other factories can cause serious injury and death. In 2013 work-related accidents caused 4,585 fatalities, which averages 12 fatal workplace accidents per day, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Although the number of fatalities is on the decline, the number is still alarming considering those deaths were preventable.

In Missouri, companies with five or more employees are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. This insurance covers medical attention and lost wages at a rate of 66.6%.
