Sawmill Worker Loses Arm in Accident

A Gem Forest Products sawmill employee sustained serious injuries when his arm was caught in a piece of machinery Wednesday morning. The accident happened in Emmett, Idaho at around 7 a.m. The workplace accident severed the 24-year-old man’s arm. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance and OSHA is investigating the incident.

St. Louis is home to several sawmills where dangerous machinery is operated on a daily basis. The machinery used at a sawmill, and other factories can cause serious injury and death. In 2013 work-related accidents caused 4,585 fatalities, which averages 12 fatal workplace accidents per day, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Although the number of fatalities is on the decline, the number is still alarming considering those deaths were preventable.

In Missouri, companies with five or more employees are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. This insurance covers medical attention and lost wages at a rate of 66.6%. The difference in pay can leave workers struggling financially making it important to contact a St. Louis workers’ compensation attorney.

The workers’ compensation attorneys at Meyerkord & Kurth will investigate the accident and explore all possible avenues for your case. Contact us to discuss your workplace accident and to receive a free consultation.
