Missouri Had The Highest Fatality Count in 2021

There is an average of over 6 million passenger car accidents in the U.S. every year. Although some car accidents are minor and only cause cuts and bruises, other collisions are much deadlier. In fact, studies show that fatal car accidents have been increasing across the country-- including in the state of Missouri. According to the MoDOT, more than 1,000 people were killed in Missouri traffic accidents in 2021 –the highest fatality count in 15 years.

Why Are Fatal Car Accidents on the Rise?

There was a two percent increase in fatal car accidents in 2021 compared to the previous year –making it the second straight year of growing fatality rates after a decade of steady decline.

Two-thirds of vehicle drivers and passengers who were killed were not wearing seatbelts. Experts believe this may be a significant reason for the increase in fatalities. Research also shows that distracted driving, particularly cellphone use, can also be linked to the increase in fatal car crashes. Forty-one percent of fatal car accidents are also due to speeding and reckless driving.

How to Prevent Car Accident Fatalities

Missouri is ranked as the 18th deadliest state for car accidents. To help lower these statistics, Missouri legislators have been working to pass a hands-free driving law that would make it illegal to hold a cellphone while driving as soon as a person gets their license. Missouri's current law only prohibits drivers 21 and under from texting while driving and comes with a $200 fine and two points against the driver's license.

While Missouri car accident fatalities have increased in recent years, there are still things that you can do to help prevent car accidents and keep yourself safe on the road. Always wear your seatbelt, obey the speed limit, and never drive while distracted. Following these simple safety tips can help make Missouri roads a safer place for everyone.
