Pedestrian Accident Claims Life of Grandmother

|

On Friday evening, a 71-year-old woman was walking her grandchildren home after leaving a Halloween venue when she was struck by an SUV. The pedestrian accident occurred in Vidor, Texas around 9 p.m. Authorities believe that the woman was walking with her grandchildren along Highway 12 when a light colored, small, SUV struck the woman. The driver of the vehicle immediately fled the scene of the crime. An ambulance rushed the woman to an area hospital but tragically, the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police are asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of the driver to please come forward. The investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrian accidents are responsible for thousands of deaths each year in the United States. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that on average there are 5,000 pedestrians killed each year in auto-related accidents. As a pedestrian, there are several precautions one should take to avoid a potential accident such as wearing reflective clothing, using crosswalks and sidewalks when available, and obeying all traffic signals. However, many of these accidents are unavoidable by the pedestrian due to them being caused by drivers. Drivers who take their eyes off the roadway for more than a couple seconds are engaging in distracted driving which is one of the main causes of pedestrian accidents.
