Texas Lawmaker Struck By Stray Bullet On New Year's Eve

|

In a tragic accident caused by negligence, a Texas lawmaker was struck in the head by a suspected stray bullet during a New Year’s celebration on Sunday. According to authorities, the State Representative stepped outside a home in a rural neighborhood north of Weslaco when he was hit by celebratory gunshot fire. Officials say a bullet fragment punctured the top of the man head and almost killed him. The 40-year-old South Texas legislator was treated at a neurosurgical unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Surgeons were able to remove the bullet fragment that had penetrated his skull and lodged itself into the top layer of his brain. Doctors told the man he is lucky to be alive. Hidalgo County Sheriff Department is investigating the accident and looking for the shooter. Police say they believe that the lawmaker was hit by a stray bullet from a negligent shooter and not believed to be a targeted. The Texas lawmaker was elected to a seventh term in 2016 and is scheduled to take the oath of office this January.
