Mazda Recalls Over 750,000 Vehicles

Mazda is issuing a recall that will affect more than 759,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. and Canada. The recall is due to a defect in the rear hatch supports that can potentially cause the hatch to fall on people and injure them. The recall includes certain 2012 through 2015 Mazda 5 vans, 2010 through 2013 Mazda 3 compact cars, as well as certain 2016 CX-3 SUVs and 2013 to 2016 CX-5. Globally, the recall will affect 2.2 million vehicles.

Mazda claims the defect is caused by insufficient corrosion protection coating applied to the hatch lift supports during the factory manufacturing. Water containing road salt can get into the supports, and over time, causes them to corrode and break. Customers risk injury if a hatch unexpectedly comes crashing down. Thankfully, no reports of accidents or injuries have been caused by the problem, according to a Mazda.

Customers with the included vehicles can get both lift supports replaced at dealers. Customers should watch for a notification from Mazda sometime in September or October informing them when they can bring their vehicles in for repairs.
