Pedestrian Accident Kills Teen

|

A pedestrian accident claimed the life of a teenager on Sunday evening. The accident happened as two teens were walking in Denton, Texas along McKinney Avenue. The Denton Police Department reported that the young men were attempted to cross Loop 288 when 16-year-old Corey West was struck by a southbound Jeep. He was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The other teen was not injured in the accident. Denton police are investigating the incident to determine a cause and it is unknown if the driver of the Jeep has been charged.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, there were 230 individuals killed in pedestrian accidents from 2012 through 2014 in Missouri alone. Auto accidents are responsible for thousands of deaths every year, and many individuals assume that it is safer to travel by foot. While there are not as many pedestrian accidents compared to auto accidents, the fatality rate is greater for pedestrians. Individuals that choose to walk or ride a bicycle lack any defense in the event of a collision with a motor vehicle. While walking in crosswalks, wearing reflective clothing, and traveling in well-lit areas may prevent some pedestrian accidents, the majority of these accidents are caused by the negligence of the motorist.
