A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday when a volunteer for Ben Carson’s presidential campaign passed away. Braden Joplin was one of four people in a van that was driving in western Iowa on icy roads. Control of the van was lost and as a result, it flipped over onto its side. Then, another vehicle on the road collided with the van. Carson was taken to the hospital for medical care. Tragically, he passed away the day of the accident. In addition, the two other volunteers and the staff member that were in the van were taken to a hospital in Iowa for medical care. When the accident occurred, Carson was in South Carolina. He put his campaign actions on pause as a result of the tragedy.
When road conditions are icy, the law states that drivers must operate their vehicle with the highest degree of care possible. That standard of care naturally changes according to the road and weather conditions. In poor weather and road conditions, highest degree of care may require drivers to slow down and to be extra vigilant.
