|

A devastating work accident happened on Wednesday afternoon when a gas pipeline accident killed two workers and injured another. The accident happened in Texas at a plant near the town of Woodsboro. The plant, Southcross Energy Partners, is located in Refugio County and based in Dallas. According to authorities, the three men were in a hole attempting to repair a the pipeline when a piece became unsecured releasing hundreds of pounds of high pressure. Two men were taken to the hospital where one died, and the third man was pronounced dead at the plant. A spokesperson for Southcross released a statement stating the accident was caused by equipment failure. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will likely conduct an investigation.

Workplace accidents are responsible for thousands of deaths and many more injuries every year. While worker’s compensation laws have been established to protect the rights of the injured workers, these laws continue to fall short. In Missouri, worker’s that suffer a work-related injury are provided coverage for medical treatment and wage replacement. However, the worker will only receive 66.6% of their average weekly wage. The difference in income often causes workers to struggle financially.
