|

Sadly in California, a bicyclist has been killed as he was participating in the Davis Double Century ride. 50-year-old, Ronald Cortez was killed when he was struck by a semi at the intersection of Sparkling Lane and Tremont Road. The accident happened when Cortez was headed northbound on Tremont Road and failed to stop at the intersection. As a result, Cortez was hit by a Valley Farms truck and killed.

According to police drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash. Likewise, the driver was on duty when he struck and killed Cortez. In addition, police stated that such a huge bicycle event is usually controlled more than it was. Although there are corner marshals flagging the direction of traffic, police state they cannot control every petal of the way.

The Davis Double Century ride is a 200-mile ride, which goes through Yolo, Solano, Napa and Lake counties. Since the accident, the committee, which leads the Davis Bike Club, is considering re-routing the trek to ensure this type of accident doesn’t happen again.
