UPMC Suffers Another Data Breach

|

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is left scratching their heads following yet another data breach. In addition, the latest breach was announced after 722 members with protected health information may have had their personal information exposed when a file with sensitive data was sent to a wrong email address.

Likewise, the breach was found on June 4, and since then an investigation determined that the file sent to the wrong email included patients names, member ID numbers, birthdates, phone numbers, physician’s office names, as well as their insurance. Luckily social security numbers and medial histories were not exposed in the data breach.

Now, UPMC Health Plan has contacted the incorrect recipient of the email, and informed staff on proper email procedures, as well as contacted the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The organization also sent letters out to the individuals who were affected in the breach. The latest data breach for UPMC is one of many over the last few years. The last breach happened earlier this year when a third-party medical biller called, Medical Management, LLC informed them that a former employee many have inappropriately accessed more than 2,2000 patient’s personal information.
