Elder Abuse Cases Triple in Pennsylvania

Elder Abuse Cases Triple in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has seen a rise in elder abuse which has tripled over the years. State officials reported that the volume of elder abuse calls has tripled and they foresee larger numbers in the future. The Department of Aging reported that there were shortcomings in the 30,000 complaints they received last year. The organization is reacting harder to counties that have not met regulations and mishandling complaints. The state has evaluated 11 of its counties and scores them with a rating system that grades green for good; yellow for repetitive or significant problems; and red for repetitive or significant problems that could endanger someone. Along with new reporting requirements, some counties are finding that they need to investigate local facilities that house seniors. However, many county directors are optimistic that the changes they have implemented will help improve elder abuse cases.

Elder abuse is on the rise not only in the Unites States but worldwide. Elder abuse can be defined by several types of abuse which can include: physical, emotional or sexual abuse, financial exploitation and neglect. If you have a loved one in a care facility it is important to look for any signs that abuse may be happening. Physical and sexual abuse can be visible by scars, bruises, broken bones, and even signs of being restrained. Poor hygiene, malnutrition and dehydration can be signs of neglect. Financial exploitation may not be as noticeable as other forms of abuse and harder to notice. This could range from missing belongings or money from the resident, large withdrawals from accounts and even being charged for unnecessary items or services provided by the facility. Always report any suspected elder abuse and immediately contact an attorney who has a proven track record with elder abuse cases. Rules and regulations vary in each state regarding elder care so obtaining an experienced attorney is important in getting justice for your loved one.
