Dental Water Causes Serious Outbreak In California

Thirty California children were hospitalized after an outbreak of bacterial infections that were contracted from contaminated water at a children’s dentist. According to officials of the Orange County Health Care Agency, children who underwent a pulpotomy at the Children's Dental Group in Anaheim were infected by water used during the procedure. Not only did the children sustain serious sickness but medical officials are now saying the children could suffer long-term effects on their health.

A pulpotomy is root canal procedure performed on children. Authorities say the patients ranged in ages three to nine years of age and all visited the clinic between March and July. Several weeks later, thirty children were hospitalized with an infected called Mycobacterium abscesses. Medical officials say Mycobacterium abscesses is slow moving and can take months to show symptoms. The Orange County Health Care Agency says they expect the numbers to grow as more infected children could show symptoms. Many of the children grew abscesses around their jaw, and many were hospitalized for weeks.

The Dental Board of California has said they are investigating the incident and will determine whether the Children's Dental Group office followed proper procedures were followed. In a worst case scenario, a child may have to have their jaw removed which could cause a lifetime of issues. Officials work to raise awareness about the outbreak, urging caregivers to watch for adverse symptoms before they get too severe. Symptoms include swelling, pain, and redness around the infected tooth and jaw bone.
