Baby Dies And Mother Injured After Elevator Malfunctions

Baby Dies And Mother Injured After Elevator Malfunctions

A 6-week-old baby has died in a tragic accident after a stroller fell down an elevator shaft in Brooklyn. According to authorities, the accident happened around 10:40 a.m. on Thursday at an apartment building on Neptune Avenue in the Sea Gate area. Police say a 21-year-old mother walked into the empty elevator on the 23rd floor with a stroller carrying her infant baby girl. The elevator shaft was empty and the mother and baby fell eight floors and landed on top of the stalled elevator car.

Officers say the baby was unresponsive when they arrived and rushed to Coney Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The mother suffered serious injury but is expected to survive. Friends say the family is devastated by the sudden death of their child.

The mother did not know that the elevator was out of service and residents say proper safety precautions were not in place around an open elevator shaft. An elevator maintenance worker was at the scene repairing the elevator several floors below. The elevator maintenance company has several past code violations. Residents say the Coney Island building has a long history of code violations and elevator complaints. Many say several senior citizens and young children live in the building and this accident only proved their worst fears. Brooklyn Police say the investigation is ongoing and the building will face multiple inspections.
