What is Talcum Powder?

News articles, television advertisements, and online media sources are reporting on the latest verdicts against Johnson & Johnson after their talcum powders have been linked to ovarian cancer. Last week, a jury in St. Louis awarded a woman with $55 million after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She had used Johnson & Johnson talcum powders for personal hygiene use on her genitals for years. In February, the family of a woman who lost her battle with ovarian cancer was awarded $72 million after the jury agreed that talcum powder ultimately led to her death.

So what is talcum powder? Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower Powder both contain the mineral talc. Talc is composed of silicon, oxygen, and magnesium. Over the years, research has linked talc (in powder form) with cancer. The American Cancer Society claims that the powder’s purpose is to absorb moisture and once inhaled it can cause cancer in and around the lungs. When a woman uses talcum powder on her genitals, the particles travel up the vagina to the ovaries leading to ovarian cancer. Researchers believe that a woman increases her risks of ovarian cancer by 30% when using talcum powder.

Now, 1,200 lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson claiming they were aware of the cancer risk. In fact, an internal memo was discovered dating back to 1997 from a media consultant stating that anyone that denies the talcum powder and cancer link would be denying evidence. Ignoring evidence is a form of negligence that places consumers at risk.
