Johnson & Johnson Ignored Cancer Risk

Johnson & Johnson Ignored Cancer Risk

Some are shocked at the recent legal battle between women with ovarian cancer and the pharmaceutical giant, Johnson & Johnson. However, the connection between an increased risk of ovarian cancer and the use of talcum powder for intimate feminine hygiene has been linked for decades. The first researchers discovering the link published the evidence in the early 1970s.

In 1971, scientists found evidence that talc particles could enter a woman’s reproductive system through the vagina, traveling through the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and into ovaries. Staggering findings by researchers were detailed in a journal stating that particles of talc were deeply embedded in a majority of ovarian tumors. Another study in 1982 published in the Cancer journal, supported a similar connection between talc use and ovarian cancer. This is followed by more than 20 studies, all supporting similar cause-effect relationships. The most recent 2013 study published by the Cancer Prevention Research journal, reviewed data collected on 2,000 women by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital. There is no denying the frightening link.

A jury in St. Louis recently found the popular manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, fully aware of the connection. Johnson and Johnson targeted female consumer even though the company has been aware of the research for decades and refused to acknowledge the deadly side effects for its feminine hygiene talc products.

Johnson and Johnson is losing the battle in the courtroom. They should have put a simple warning label on their products containing talcum powder.
