Fifty-one commuters were involved in a crash while they were traveling in a Metrolink train early Tuesday morning. The accident happened at approximately 5:44 a.m. when the Metrolink and a truck collided causing the train cars to derail in Southern California. The train engineer and 27 of the commuters were injured when three of the four train cars derailed onto their side. Those injured sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical. The National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the accident and authorities are questioning the driver of the truck involved.
There are thousands of train accidents involving passenger vehicles each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. A majority of these accidents occur at crossings where safety devices and warnings are lacking. Although train accidents occur less often then vehicle accidents, the estimated number of accidents is over 10,000 each year, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a train accident, contacting an accident attorney is important in order to recover compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
