Man Pleads Guilty To Crash That Killed Missouri Man

A California man has pleaded guilty to second-degree involuntary manslaughter stemming from a crash, which killed a Chesterfield man. Dale Kawamura of Oakland, California caused a crash by hitting an SUV head-on, which killed, Clayton Pfeiffer. At the time of the accident, Kawamura was high on meth when he hit Pfeiffer's vehicle. Furthermore, prosecutors dropped the first-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault charges, and instead recommended a two-year prison sentence. According to Ed Magee, spokesman for St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch, "We had issues proving the impairment and that's why we went with the plea deal."

What makes the case even more tragic is that Pfeiffer was only 18-years-old, had just graduated from high school, and was an aspiring freshman baseball player at Missouri Baptist University when he was struck and killed by Kawamura. Likewise, Kawamura's lawyer, Daniel Juengel stated, "My client is very sorry about what happened. We had some arguments to make but I didn't have an ironclad defense either." Understandably Pfeiffer's father has stated that although he's tried to stay away from the judicial process of the case because it's too hard to face, he's rather see Kawamura plead guilty to lesser charges than potentially get acquitted at trail. Furthermore, Pfeiffer's father said in regards to sentencing, "Whether it's two, five, or 20 years, it's never going to be enough. The bottom line is, I'll never get to see my son again."
