Cardinals Outfielder, Oscar Tavaras Dies In Car Crash

How will the Cardinals recover from such a tragedy after losing such a young and talented player? Sadly, Cardinals outfielder and active player, Oscar Tavaras has died in a fatal car accident which happened in his native home, the Dominican Republic. Tavaras was only 22-years-old, and his girlfriend which was a passenger in the car he was driving was, 18-year-old, Edilia Arvelo which died as well. Not much is yet known about the life of Arvelo, yet the pair came from the same small town in the Dominican. Although the cause of the crash is still being looked into, it is suspected that heavy rain which was in the area at the time of the crash played a part in the fatality. Likewise, it has not been noted as of yet whether or not any other vehicles were involved, or if either were wearing their seatbelts.

The Cardinal’s nation as well as the entire sports community is mourning the loss of such a young and extremely talented player. Tavaras was ranked the second and third best prospect in the minor league, and many can only speculate how much more his promising career had ahead of it, yet we will never see it reach its full potential. One of Tavaras last at bats was just a glimpse of his full potential when he hit a seventh inning home run against San Francisco in game two of the National League Division Series; the Cardinals won the game. Moreover, Tavaras is remembered for his gentle and sweet generosity on and off the field. LIkewise, many of his mourning teammates can’t believe such a horrible thing could happen to such a wonderful young man. MLB Player Association director, Tony Clark said in a statement, “We are very saddened to learn of the news that a car accident has claimed the life of Oscar Tavares and his girlfriend in the Dominican Republic. Oscar had a very promising future, on and off the field, and this news is heartbreaking on many levels. It’s never easy to lose a member of our fraternity, and to lose one so young is devastating news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of both, as well as to the St. Louis Cardinals organization and Oscar’s many fans in the United States and the Dominican Republic.” Fans and friends of Tavaras have been taking to social media to express their loss and condolences. If heaven exists, then it gained a bright new talent to play ball from above.
