Regional surgeons set care standards

The surgical community in Wichita, Ks has taken steps toward solving medical malpractice problems by implementing a new set of standards for it’s surgeons. Medical malpractice has been a hot topic in Kansas and the Wichita medical community has taken notice.

“Time-out” procedures are being put in place for nurses and physicians at twelve health care providers in the Wichita area. participating organizations announced the plan this past summer at a conference at the Kansas Leadership Center. The initiative was started with the goal of increasing awareness of safe surgical practices, which would promote better patient outcomes. The procedure is essentially a checklist that medical personnel will go over before they begin a surgical procedure. It’s been led by physicians and initiated by nurses and support staff.

In April, Kansas legislatures have moved to increase the long-standing cap on monies received for medical malpractice claims. Senate Bill 311 has passed both the Kansas House and the Senate, all that remains is Governor Sam Brownback's signature. The bill aims to slowly increase the damages award to $350,000 by 2022 for pain and suffering, over $100,000 more the the current, 25-year old statute.
