Numerous lawsuits are being filed against Bayer Pharmaceuticals for alleged side effects that are suffered in women from taking birth control medications such as Yasmin, Yaz and Beyaz. Among the reported side effects are risks of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, venous clot injuries, gallbladder injuries and other serious health consequences. Women taking the birth control medication are alleging that Bayer failed to adequately warn of the risks of serious side effects. While some women have suffered from permanent health injuries, others have allegedly died from blood clots that result in heart attacks or strokes. Women taking the birth control medication have based their lawsuits on the fact that the pills contain a drug ingredient called drospirenone, which is linked to an increased risk of blood clots.

Although the FDA has voted to keep Yasmin and Yaz on the market, the number of lawsuits and settlements that have occurred as a result of these birth control pills is overwhelming. As of February 2014, there have been 4,600 lawsuits pending against Bayer for venous clot injuries, and this does not include the number of claims that has already been settled. As of this same date, Bayer has settled approximately 8,250 claims in the United States, totaling around $1.69 billion. In 2013, Bayer settled lawsuits alleging gallbladder injuries for approximately $24 million and there have been over 8,800 lawsuits filed.
