Baxter International Recalls Dialysis Solution

Baxter International, Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in Deerfield, Illinois, has recently conducted a nationwide recall of its product called Ambu-Flex II, a drug that is a Dianeal PD-2 peritoneal dialysis solution with a 1.5 percent dextrose 6000 mL. The drug is used to treat chronic renal failure in patients who undergo peritoneal dialysis therapy. The voluntary recall came about after patients complained that mold particles were found in the solution containers, which presumably resulted from leaks in the flexible plastic containers that the solution was packaged in. The single affected lot number is C903799 and it was distributed to dialysis centers, facilities and patients from May 2013 to January 2014. Although adverse health reactions or quality problems are currently unknown, consumers who experience any problems or side effects are encouraged to report their issues to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.

Baxter International, Inc., just like many other pharmaceutical companies, has experienced several recalls of its drugs and products. When this happens, consumers should immediately be alerted of such recalls and they should engage in proper cautionary measures to avoid taking unsafe drugs. However, pharmaceutical companies should be held to a high standard of making sure they don't manufacture unsafe drugs. This not only ensures public health at large, but it also maintains stability and growth in the marketplace when consumers have faith that they can buy safe pharmaceutical drugs off the shelves.
