Battery Packs Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Lenovo, Inc., a North Carolina based company, has issued a voluntary recall of its ThinkPad notebook computer battery packs due to a fire hazard. Specifically, the recall was issued after it was found that the battery packs can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The battery packs were sold with various ThinkPad notebooks including, the Edge 11, 13 and 14 series, the T410, T420, T510 and W510 series, and the X100e, X120e, X200, X201 and X201s series. Additionally, the battery packs were also sold separately, on their own. The black battery packs are approximately 8 to 11 inches long, 1 to 3 inches wide and about 1 inch high. The recall encompasses almost 35,000 units in the United States and another 3,000 units in Canada. The recalled battery packs were sold nationwide at computer and electronic stores, authorized dealers and online at from October 2010 though April 2011 for between $350 and $3,000 when sold as part of ThinkPad notebook computers. Conversely, when sold separately, the battery packs costs between $80 and $150. To date, two incidents of battery packs overheating have been reported. While no injuries have been reported, the incidents resulted in damage to the computer, battery packs and nearby property. Consumers who may be in possession of this recalled product should immediately cease use, turn off their ThinkPad notebook computer, remove the battery pack and contact Lenovo for a free replacement battery pack.
