A 4-year-old boy from Lenexa, Kansas lost his leg following a lawnmower accident this past Sunday. The toddler's father was mowing their lawn when the 4-year-old got behind the mower and became entangled in it. Emergency personnel were called and the toddler was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. Because of the boy's severe injuries, doctors were forced to amputate his right leg just below the knee. Doctors and the boy's family hope that, since the boy is so young, adjustment to a prosthetic leg will go smoothly. The toddler also severely injured his arm, but his doctors are confident that, with a few more surgeries, amputation will not be necessary.

While it may be underreported, lawn mower injuries are not all that uncommon. According to the Amputee Coalition, more than 600 children undergo amputations due to lawn mower accidents every year. However, thousands of children suffer injuries and a few children die each year due to lawn mower accidents. While newer model lawn mowers boast about improved safety features, there are many skeptics who allege the safety features are blatantly inadequate.
