Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation
A 56-year-old man, who has been arrested around 150 times for traffic related offenses and allegedly killed 3 people in the last 35 years due to his reckless driving, was recently sentenced to just 5 years in prison for his latest run in with the law. On October 5, 2012, the 56-year-old male was the driver of a hit-and-run that killed a 4-year-old boy and left his 10-year-old brother injured. The accident occurred at about 7:30 pm on St. Charles Rock Road. The 56-year-old man, driving a GMC Sierra pickup, hit the brothers and continued driving. The 4-year-old died at the scene of the accident and the 10-year-old suffered leg injuries. Police found the 56-year-old man's car days later and linked him to the accident; the man did not turn himself in. Prosecutors, who initially charged the man with second-degree murder and assault, say they accepted the plea deal due to lack of evidence and witness credibility problems. However, the mother of the boys, and many others, argue that the man's past history should have been enough for a murder conviction instead of involuntary manslaughter. In 1983, the man ran a red light and hit another vehicle, killing two people. The man's license was revoked in 1993; he has not driven legally in almost 20 years. The man has been arrested for driving under the influence no less than 11 times, 6 of which have resulted in convictions. The mother of the boys filed a civil suit in 2012, which was settled out of court.
