GM takes the blame and offers $1,000,000

General Motors has publicized a settlement figure they proposed to the surviving families of the victims of faulty ignition switches that have recently been at the forefront of national attention. GM will give an additional $300,000 to each surviving spouse and family member dependent, and acknowledged that the financial sum could not replace loss or impairment of life. While the original list of victims totaled at 13, GM acknowledged they would include additional people affected by the switches, if they had been involved in a front-impact car crash where airbags did not deploy. If the victims and surviving families accept this settlement, they will also have to agree to waive their right to sue General Motors in the future for these harms.

The General Motors scandal highlights the importance for consumer protection and company transparency in our society. GM first learned for the faulty switches in 2004, yet did not make a recall until 2014. Many potential victims could come forward in the media hullabaloo GM's scandal has caused.
