Dr. Oz Called in to Question

US Senators criticized TV's Dr. Mehmet Oz this week. Oz- originally made famous via his association with the Oprah Winfrey show- recently claimed his weight loss products to be miracle solutions.

Missouri's own Claire McCaskill, chairwoman of the subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance, denounced Oz's claims. McCaskill emphasized the lack of scientific findings regarding Oz's products, including green coffee. McCaskill also highlighted Oz's fame as a responsibility to the public. Certainly, Oz's fame and degree as a medical doctor influences public trust of products he supports. If these products are not helpful, Oz may be participating in "puffery" often used by salespeople, like a used car salesman. However, unlike a used-car salesman, who the average person expects to be engaging in some sort of puffery, a medical doctor is expected to inform the public honestly about products to promote good health in society. If Oz's statements regarding these products are so overblown the Senate has to get involved, it reminds us to always be on our guard about product endorsement.
