A recently published study found that approximately 10 percent of woman taking the breast cancer drug trastuzumab (Herceptin) will suffer from some sort of heart problem. On the positive side, the study found that these problems usually reverse after treatment concludes. The breast cancer drug is prescribed in cases that test positive for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 ("HER 2"). HER 2 promotes cancer cell growth. Herceptin, given after primary treatment for breast cancer, works by killing cancer cells. The big down side is that the drug is known to foster heart problems, including congestive heart failure and decreasing the heart's ability to pump blood out of its main pumping chamber. These finding were based on an 8-year study of more than 5,000 women. The women comprised three separate groups, one did not take the medication, the second group took the medication for one year and the third group took the medication for two years. Of the women who took the drug for two years, roughly 10 percent suffered cardiac problems. Of the women who took the drug for one year, roughly 5 percent suffered cardiac problems. Congestive heart failure occurred in less than 1 percent of both groups taking the drug. Around 7 percent of the women in the two-year group experienced blood pumping problems while 4 percent of women in the one-year group experienced similar complications.
