Scary Side Effects of Testosterone Treatments

Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

As evidenced by numerous pending lawsuits, testosterone gel supplements have been linked to serious medical risks. For example, AndroGel and other testosterone treatments are believed to cause an increased risk of heart attacks, according to various recent medical studies. Just recently, four lawsuits were filed in Illinois involving men who developed cardiovascular problems after using AndroGel to treat low testosterone. Three of the men suffered heart attacks and one suffered a stroke. All of the men maintain that they have no previous cardiac history and that their injuries are directly related to AndroGel. Although the FDA previously approved AndroGel, on January 31, it announced its investigation of the safety of testosterone therapy, including the risk of stroke, heart attack and death. The decision reportedly was a result of recent medical studies. Perhaps equally alarming, studies have shown that many doctors do not even test the actual testosterone levels of patients before prescribing the risky medication, leading to unnecessary prescriptions. A study published in November 2013 by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that side effects of testosterone treatments were linked to increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, and death among older men with certain pre-existing heart problems. Furthermore, another recent study published in the medical journal PLOSOne, found that testosterone treatments may double the risk of heart attack for younger men with heart disease and men over the age of 65.
