Pradaxa Can Lead to Irreversible Damage

Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

Pradaxa first hit the market in 2010 and has since been heavily prescribed. The medication is used to prevent stroke and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, the New England Journal of Medicine had published studies that warn because there is no effective treatment for severe bleeding caused by Pradaxa, patients are put at risk. Pradaxa patients cannot be given a reversal agent to stop the anticoagulant effects of the drug and stop severe bleeding, unlike Warfarin and Coumadin. After increasing complaints were received by the FDA from Pradaxa patients experiencing extensive bleeding, the FDA launched an investigation into the side effects of the drug in late 2011. Since then, more patients have suffered complications with the drug, including serious internal bleeding and death. The controversial drug has also been linked to a higher risk of heart attacks and chest pains. Although countless lawsuits have been filed and critics question why the drug has not been recalled, as of 2012, more than 3.7 million patients had been prescribed Pradaxa in the U.S. alone. In 2012, the FDA found that Pradaxa did not present an excessive risk of bleeding. The FDA did not address the potential for uncontrollable bleeding and its irreversibility. Doctors were warned by the FDA to not prescribe the drug to mechanical heart valve patients. The manufacturer of the drug added a black box warning to the drug warning of various risks.
