California Company Recalls 8.7 Million Pounds of Meat

Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

According to federal officials, close to 9 million pounds of meat in four states has been recalled after a California meat company processed "diseased and unsound" animals without a full federal inspection. The meat products, which include beef carcasses and boxes of beef oxtail, liver, cheeks, tongue and other meats, were distributed to various retailers in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. Shipments ranged from 30 to 60 pounds. The Petaluma-based Rancho Feeding Corporation, who issued the recall, has not reported any incidents of illness linked to the meat to the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The affected products, which were produced January 1, 2013 through January 7, 2014, were placed in boxes bearing the establishment number "EST. 527" inside the USDA mark of inspection with each box bearing the case code number ending in either "3" or "4." The recall is of the most serious category, or a "Class 1 level." A class 1 level denotes a health hazard situation in which there is reasonable probability that using the product will cause "serious, adverse health consequences or death." Needless to say, without a complete inspection, the meat is unfit for human consumption. Coincidentally, the same company recalled more than 40,000 pounds of similar meat products just last month that also failed to get a full federal inspection. The implicated meat in this previous recall was distributed solely to California retailers.
