Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation
Early this morning in Sauget, Illinois, a sewer gas explosion sent multiply manhole covers flying, causing damage to a power line, cutting off electricity to a factory and injuring at least one man. The village's sewer system lost power at around 5:15 am. It was while employees were working on repairing the outage, that the gas explosion occurred. According to a Sauget Police Chief, during repair efforts, "an electric line arced and that triggered a fire in the sewer system that eventually caused the explosion around 7:50 am." Electric lines near the Afton Chemical plaint in the 500 block of Monsanto Avenue were damaged as a result of the incident. Following the gas explosion, Monsanto Avenue was closed until late afternoon. As a result of the power line damage, electricity to the Eastman Chemical Co. Plant was knocked out. Ameren Illinois crews reportedly responded and worked to restore power in the area. Lastly, according to the Police Chief, an Afton worker was injured in the explosion. The worker, however, refused medical treatment and continued on the job.
