In 2013, a commuter ferry crashed in lower Manhattan after it departed from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey with 326 passengers and 5 crewmembers on board. After the boat departed, it crashed into a New York City pier that sent passengers falling down stairs and into walls and other equipment on the ferry. More than 80 people were seriously injured, which resulted from multiple personal injury claims being filed as a result. More settlements have recently been filed in the Newark federal court from the previous personal injury lawsuits that were filed last year. The settlement agreements range from $25,000 being awarded to a passenger who suffered from soft tissue injuries as a result from his ride on the ferry, up to $55,000 being awarded to a passenger who suffered from a knee injury and subsequent surgery to fix the injuries he sustained on the ferry.
Seastreak, the owner of the ferry, has reportedly settled numerous personal injury claims for more than $1 million to date. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an investigation of the ferry after it crashed in response to the ferry captain's complaints that he couldn't control the ferry's engines before the accident occurred. Despite the fact that the ferry's engines passed a Coast Guard inspection after they were replaced in 2012, the NTSB is continuing its investigation to rule out foul play or any further negligence that might result in the owner paying out more settlements.
