A popular comedian was awarded $1.3 million in damages by a Nevada jury for a leg injury he suffered in 2007 while performing at Las Vegas hotel-casino, Bellagio. In a 6-2 decision, the jury returned its verdict after two weeks of testimony and about 12 hours of deliberation. Although the 61-year-old stand-up comedian requested at least $7.1 million, he reportedly was happy with the jury award. The comedian was injured when his leg became tangled in wiring on stage during a private performance for HSBC Card Services, Inc. He suffered an Achilles tendon injury. As a result, the comedian alleges that he's permanently hobbled. HSBC Card Services, Inc. was initially named as a defendant in the suit, but those two parties reached an undisclosed settlement just days before the trial. The comedian presented evidence in court that he lost millions of dollars in lifetime earnings as a result of this injury. However, the eight-person jury ordered Bellagio to pay $1.2 million for lost income, $100,000 for pain and suffering, plus $8,500 for medical expenses. The comedian's attorney stated he believed the jury "saw it was all Bellagio's fault." However, the attorney who represented Bellagio in the matter denied that the hotel and its employees were responsible and stated that it would be up the Bellagio owners to decide whether to appeal.
