Abbott Laboratories Recalls Heart Ailment Drug

Abbott Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company, has recently conducted a voluntary recall of a Philippine batch of Grendis, a heart medication that is manufactured by the company. Grendis is an antiplatelet drug used for prevention purposes in patients who have been treated for a coronary, a myocardial infraction, angina, a non-hemorrhagic stroke or transient ischemic attack and it is used to reduce vein graft occlusion after a patient has undergone bypass surgery. The recall went into effect after a batch of the medication was damaged by a refrigeration system during the manufacturing process. The recall of the Philippine batch H003 was conducted after Abbott received complaints about a bad smell that came from the batch. After an investigation of the manufacturing site took place, it was determined that the smell was due to an increase in Benzoic acid, an impurity and an active pharmaceutical ingredient that is used in the refrigeration system during the manufacturing process.

The FDA was made aware of the voluntary recall and it has advised all pharmacies, both in the Philippines and the United States, to remove the affected batch from their premises immediately. Additionally, the FDA has warned consumers to stop their use of the medication and to return the medication to its place of purchase or to Abbott Laboratories directly. American consumers have a right to expect products purchased in the United States to be reasonably safe for their intended use. Manufacturers of goods that sell in the United States have to meet this standard. When they fail to meet this standard, they are negligent.
