Pittsburg Man Paralyzed by Police Department Files Suit
Leon Ford, 20, has filed suit against the city of Pittsburg, its police leadership, and three officers. Mr. Ford was paralyzed when he was shot during a routine traffic stop by police. According to police, Mr. Ford attempted to flee in his car, and officers shot the man in response to that. Plaintiff's counsel has stated it is unknown why the car lurched forward, but he will present his client's side of the story at trial. Officers shot Mr. Ford four times, and one bullet struck Mr. Ford in the spine. Doctors believe he will never walk again. The suit claims the officers used excessive force. According to the police report, the officers initially stopped Mr. Ford for a routine traffic stop and believed him to be a wanted man. After offices shot Mr. Ford, it was discovered that he wasn't the person officers were looking for in the first place. This entire event was caught on camera, and both sides will likely use this evidence at trial. What is interesting about this case is that the officers claim the young man tried to flee, but Mr. Ford had never been arrested before. He had no warrants. Police searched the car and found nothing illegal. Essentially, Mr. Ford had no reason to run from the police after he safely pulled his car over during the initial stop.
The biggest obstacle to Mr. Ford's suit is the video of the car lurching forward. Mr. Ford has given a reason why the car went forward, but it could have been something as simple as Mr. Ford forgetting to take the care out of drive and removing his foot from the brake.
