Beyaz Pulmonary Embolisms Reported to FDA

Beyaz Pulmonary Embolisms Reported to FDA

Meyerkord and Meyerkord, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received several reports of negative side effects linked with the oral contraceptive Beyaz. The reports have ranged from pulmonary embolism, shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain, rash and weight gain. Beyaz, manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, contains drospirenone, a type of female sex hormone also referred to as progestin that has been linked with complications. In fact, in 2011 the FDA released a statement concerning birth control pills comprised of drospirenone, which states, "Preliminary results of the FDA-funded study suggest an approximately 1.5-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for women who use drospirenone-containing birth control pills compared to users of other hormonal contraceptives." In 2012, after further examination, the FDA released another statement on the matter, which states, "FDA has concluded that drospirenone-containing birth control pills may be associated with a higher risk for blood clots than other progestin-containing pills. FDA is adding information about the studies to the labels of drospirenone-containing birth control pills." Patients reporting complaints after using Beyaz have described persistent leg pain, severe chest pain or sudden shortness of breath, the same symptoms commonly associated with blood clots.

Although no lawsuits have been filed against Beyaz and its makers, many lawsuits have been filed against similar birth control makers whose products also contain drospirenone. Manufacturers who know or should know that its products are unsafe yet still places said product on the market will be held liable for all resulting injuries.
