An Alton man who sued the Boy Scouts after his legs were crushed when a tree fell on him at Camp Warren Levis has reached a settlement. The Alton man, 51 years old at the time, was at Camp Warren Levis in Godfrey in July 2010 serving as assistance Scoutmaster to help his son, who was participating in the camp, work on merit badges. On July 22, 2010, while the man was sleeping in his tent a 50-foot red oak tree fell onto the tent and pinned his legs. The Alton man eventually lost his right leg above the knee and suffered crushing injuries to his left leg that did not result in amputation. The rescuers who came to the man's aid had to travel more than 100 feet down a mud path and cut the tree into pieces before airlifting the man to a St. Louis hospital. The man subsequently filed suit against Boy Scouts of America and Lewis and Clark Council Inc. alleging the defendants knew or should have known the tree posed a danger and removed the tree. Although the details of the settlement have not been disclosed, the man reportedly filed suit on three different counts and asked for damages of at least $50,000 to compensate for his extensive medical bills.
