KC Diocese Reaches Settlement in Abuse Case

Meyerkord, Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit brought by a Missouri couple. The couple brought suit alleging their 14-year-old son committed suicide in 1983 because of repeated sexual abuse by a Kansas City priest. The couple, of Independence, Missouri, filed suit in Jackson County in 2011 after a man who had been an altar boy with their son told to couple of the alleged abuse. Jury selection for the trial had begun on Monday when it was announced a settlement had been reached. Diocesan attorneys have stated that, despite allegations raised in the suit to the contrary, there was no proof the diocese new the boy had been abused or that the boy had committed suicide because of the abuse. However, the Diocese reportedly chose to settle the claim due to financial and emotional considerations on the part of both parties. Some have questioned the diocese's motives for the settlement, claiming the settlement was reached due to proof of the cover-up being made public. This skepticism could be in part because this is not the first abuse allegation. In 2008, the diocese settled a suit involving 47 plaintiffs and 12 current or former priests for $10 million.
