United Stated manufacturer, John Deere has issued a recall of John Deere's Gator, a recreational utility vehicle the company manufactures. The recall is aimed at vehicles that were manufactured between May 2012 and October 2012. The product, around 4,700 units, was sold nationwide from August 2012 through January 2013 for between $12,900 and $15,500 at John Deere dealers. The utility vehicle has side-by-side seating for two people and is available in three different colors. The basis for this recall is that the oil filter can leak posing a fire hazard. John Deere alleges the engine supplier did not manufacture the oil filter to specification, resulting in pinholes or cracks being identified in the filters. John Deere has received four reports of incidents resulting in fires yet no injuries have resulted to date. Consumers who may have this product in their possession should cease use and contact John Deere at (800) 537-8233 or www.johndeere.com to schedule a free inspection and repair.

Consumers of any goods, especially recreational goods, expect to be able to use said product without being exposed to any unknown safety hazards. When a product fails to adhere to these safety standards, it means the manufacturer has been negligent. This product was manufactured in the United States and sold nationwide under a very well known brand name, John Deere. Consumers sometimes rely on the manufacturer's location and brand name when determining if a given product is safe. However, increasingly frequent cases like this prove that consumers can take all reasonable precautions and still suffer injury due to someone else's negligence. Although the company alleges the hazard is the fault of the engine supplier, in the end John Deere has a duty to ensure the product they are putting on the market is safe. Manufacturers are liable for any injuries resulting from defective products it puts on the market.
