Golden Corral Sued in Wyoming over Furor from Norovirus Outbreak

Recently, a Casper, WY based law firm filed a class action lawsuit against the buffet restaurant, Golden Corral. The suit alleges the restaurant was negligent in both the manufacture and sale of food which was contaminated with the virus, as well as, in allowing its employees to continue to work in close proximity to both food and patrons, while infected with the virus. The outbreak was revealed late in 2012.

As of now, the size and scope of the class is still being determined, but Wyoming Department of Health officials warned the 305 cases of foodborne illness reported between Nov. 17 and Dec. 19 of 2012 may only be the "tip of the iceberg" in terms of the virus' full reach. The amount of unreported cases could be staggering given the health department listed twenty-one employees who reported working at the restaurant with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting and around 7,000 diners who visited the restaurant during the nearly one month long span.

The restaurant has not spoken to reporters in Wyoming since the suit was filed and for good reason. If the allegations are true, gross negligence on this scale is inexcusable. One could understand a sick employee or two coming to work and improperly handling food. Disgusting? Yes, but not outside the realm of possibility. Allowing over twenty employees who displayed symptoms of the virus to continue working, interacting with food and customers alike for almost a month is shocking. It shows not only a complete and utter disregard of basic food safety procedure but of their employees and customers as well.

Foodborne illness is always a lurking threat in our society today. The surest way to prevent it is through proper manufacturing and handling by restaurants and vendors. When these methods are abandoned the risk of disease and illness climbs and the public health is at risk. Victims of this negligence are entitled to legal representation.
