IKEA Recalls Children's Wall-Mounted Lamps Due to Strangulation Hazard

Meyerkord & Kurth, LLC: A Legacy of Legal Innovation

This past week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) along with IKEA North America announced the recall of children's wall-mounted lamps due to a strangulation hazard. Specifically, the recall involves IKEA children's SMILA-series wall-mounted lamps manufactured in the United States, Lithuania and China. The lamps were sold in 8 designs: a blue star, yellow moon, pink flower, white flower, red heart, green bug, blue seashell and an orange seahorse. The plastic wall-mounted lamps stand about 11 inches high by 11 inches wide, have a 7 ft. long electrical cord with an in-line switch and utilize a 25-watt light bulb. The product was sold between July 1999 and May 2013 exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide, in IKEA's catalog and online at for between $10 and $13. This recall affects around 23 million units worldwide. This recall was prompted after a 16-month old child died after getting entangled in the lamp's cord in the child's crib. A separate incident involved a 15-month-old child in a crib becoming entangled in the lamp's cord and nearly strangled. In both incidents, the infants pulled the lamp cord into the crib. Consumers who may be in possession of this product should cease use immediately and contact IKEA at (888) 966-4532 or online at for a free repair kit. The repair kit includes safety instructions and self-adhesive fasteners to attach the lamp's cord to the wall. For more information regarding the specific products affected, click on the link above.
